Breakthrough Conversations for Coaches

Strengthening the coach’s capacity to guide emotionally charged moments toward behavioural breakthrough.

When a client is facing a pivotal behavioural challenge, and something meaningful is at stake, the quality of the coach’s presence and guidance can determine whether the conversation deepens or deflects.

Breakthrough Conversations develops the coach’s capacity to work deliberately with these moments.

Coaches learn to anchor the work in specific behavioural situations, work skilfully with reactive and resourceful states, and support genuine developmental shift.

What shapes behaviour under pressure

Breakthrough Conversations is an attachment-informed approach. Behaviour under pressure is shaped by relational needs such as

  • respect
  • belonging
  • autonomy
  • psychological safety

When these needs feel secure, clients are more able to access grounded and resourceful states. When they feel threatened, protective patterns can take over.

Breakthrough Conversations equips coaches to help clients recognise what is at stake in key interactions and work consciously with the emotional and relational patterns shaping behaviour.

From this awareness, new behavioural choices become possible.

The approach integrates three core capabilities:

  • anchoring the conversation in a specific behavioural moment
  • recognising and working with emotional state
  • exploring the relational needs shaping behaviour

By working with both reactive and resourceful states, coaches support clients to move from reactive patterns toward more skilful action.

The aim is behavioural breakthrough: practical change in how the client responds to real situations.

The Breakthrough Conversations approach led to a profound exploration of my clients’ relational patterns, which has set things up brilliantly for our ongoing work.

Coach development unfolds through a progressive learning pathway.

Level 1
Mastering Your Own State

Coaches develop embodied awareness of emotional activation and strengthen their ability to access grounded, resourceful states.

Level 2
Applying Breakthrough Conversations

Coaches learn to anchor conversations in pivotal behavioural moments and guide clients through the emotional and relational dynamics shaping behaviour.

Level 3
Deepening Fluency in Practice

Coaches develop fluency in facilitating conversations that combine emotional depth with behavioural change

Current programmes focus primarily on Levels 1 and 2, with Level 3 developing further through advanced practice and supervision. Programmes combine workshops, demonstrations, supervised practice and integration into real coaching assignments.

Taster sessions for coaches

Short introductory webinars offer coaches, coaching networks and membership bodies a practical way to experience the Breakthrough Conversations approach before committing to a fuller programme.

These sessions introduce the core ideas behind the work and show how greater attention to emotional state, relational dynamics and embodied awareness can deepen behavioural change in coaching.

They work well as a first introduction for coaching communities, professional bodies and organisations with internal coaching populations.

Ongoing supervision

Coaches who wish to deepen their practice may participate in Breakthrough Conversations supervision groups.

These provide opportunities to review cases, refine precision and continue developing the methodology in real client work.

Through this work, coaches develop:

  • confidence working with emotional intensity
  • precision in identifying pivotal behavioural moments
  • the ability to stabilise and strengthen resourceful states in clients
  • skill in reducing reactivity without suppressing emotion
  • A more evidence-informed understanding of how attachment patterns and mindful attention shape understanding, regulation and collaboration
  • deeper developmental impact in coaching assignments

The result is coaching that is more emotionally attuned, behaviourally focused and developmentally effective.

Client feedback confirms that my coaching practice has developed greater depth as a result of my work with Breakthrough Conversations. Connecting to the fundamental human needs underlying thoughts and behaviours has been transformational for me and my coaching clients.

The methodology in more depth

The Breakthrough Conversations approach is set out in Graham Lee’s book Breakthrough Conversations for Coaches, Consultants and Leaders, which explores the model, developmental pathway and practical application in more detail.

The session was a great success, thank you! Our coaching will change as a result of our time with you.
